Operating system on the picture frame is Xubuntu. The setup is running Apache and PHP that handle the images. When the machine boots up, it logs the default user in and starts up Firefox automatically. The web-browser then connects to the localhost and starts a script that makes a connection to the Flickr. The code goes through the RSS stream containing the latest uploaded images, selects the ones that match the tag parameter given by the user and then picks one of the images by random. Thanks Akeeh for the script!

So, there you have it. Not the most detailed project ever but hopefully enough to get you started. This was actually something that I had been planning on doing for years and I'm glad that I finally decided to go through it. My co-workers just love the frame and hopefully it is enough to compensate for my overly tidy office... or then again maybe not. :)

ps. the cables will be routed via those wires coming from the ceiling in the end.

12.05.2009 14:36 anacronWhy doesn't it pick up latest images & projects from all the mods :D
19.02.2009 10:56 TeknoperunaHmm... Would have made those frames deeper, thus hiding laptop when looking from the sideways... But hey, cool idea and good finishing whatsoever.
29.01.2009 15:30 vikiReally nice work.
25.01.2009 18:28 qwertyreally cool
25.01.2009 13:40 EuronenYeap.. I beginned to build it. I'll make the frame from oak batten
25.01.2009 12:08 EuronenI have been thinking would I convert one of my old laptop to a music machine and put it on the wall then.
25.01.2009 03:23 JohnEdwardReally beautiful and nicely done, as always :)
23.01.2009 20:42 JapalaThanks. As I didn't "invent" anything new, I decided to post the project to the ATM and not to Metku.net . Still, this was a nice ending to a several year old dream for me. :)
23.01.2009 20:40 mofupoWell, the idea is not new, but it's a very nice execution. I especially like the software solution. Ubuntu fanboy :D
23.01.2009 20:40 JapalaNobody sees the frame from the side or from the behind so this doesn't matter in this case. Naturally you could remove the laptop from the casing but in this situation this was not necessary.
23.01.2009 20:37 JiikaxCool. If it just would be better if it wouldn't be so "fat" ;D
